For decades, the United States has had an embargo banning certain defense articles from being exported, re-exported, or transferred to the Republic of Cyprus.
In 2019, through the Eastern Mediterranean Security and Energy Partnership Act and again later through the National Defense Authorization Act, Congress lifted this outdated embargo on Cyprus.
However, it did so only on an annual basis -- in other words, the acts require the administration to provide a re-certification every year.
Now is the time to take the U.S.-Cyprus relationship to the next level and permanently lift the embargo on Cyprus.
Over the last several years, Cyprus has shown its critical importance to U.S. interests in the region. From its counterterrorism efforts to its most recent leading of the creation of the Amalthea maritime humanitarian corridor to provide humanitarian relief in Gaza, Cyprus has proven itself a reliable and invaluable partner to the United States as it navigates new dynamics in the region.
Please contact your Representative today urging them to support the bill lifting the embargo permanently and taking the U.S.-Cyprus relationship to the next level.
