Key members of Congress are taking the lead in opposing the request from Turkey to purchase 40 F-16 fighter jets and dozens of modernization kits for its existing warplanes from the United States. Congressmen Frank Pallone and Gus Bilirakis are asking their colleagues to join a letter to Secretary of State Blinken and Secretary of Defense Austin asking to stop the sale.

After its ejection from the F-35 program and the imposition of US sanctions for its purchase of Russian S-400s, the Erdogan government has made it clear that it has no intention of coming into compliance with US law or upholding the standards expected of a NATO ally.

One of the reasons Congress insisted on Turkey’s ejection from the F-35 program was because of the significant risks associated with collocating S-400s and F-35s. Experts have noted that providing Turkey modernization kits poses similar risks if Ankara continues to possess Russian S-400s.

Even considering Turkey’s request under the present circumstances sends the wrong signal to Turkey, one that Erdogan can escape accountability.

Hello, Representatives Frank Pallone and Gus Bilirakis are sending a letter to Secretary of State Blinken and Secretary of Defense Austin in opposition to Turkey's request to purchase 40 F-16 fighter jets and 80 modernization kits for its existing warplanes from the United States. In their letter, they note that "the Erdogan regime has repeatedly used its military power to destabilize the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, South Caucasus, and North Africa for years." Specifically, they emphasize that Turkey and Turkish-backed forces "have utilized American-made weaponry and components during these incursions to commit war crimes" and that granting Turkey's request "will more likely lead to further death and destruction in the region." In addition to noting Turkey's destabilizing actions in the region, Reps. Bilirakis and Pallone also note that the Erdogan regime continues to engage in undemocratic acts within Turkey as well, continuing its human rights abuses. The letter makes it clear that "[a]pproving this proposal would reward President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for ignoring both Turkey’s alliance commitments to the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the vast human rights abuses his regime continues to commit at home and abroad."
