Tom Barrack: A rogue US ambassador?

Congressional leaders are sounding the alarm: US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack is undermining US diplomacy, putting American national security at risk, and and putting American allies and partners in danger.

His latest comments expressing his belief that Turkey will soon be allowed back into the F-35 program disregards US law, which clearly states that Turkey must remove its Russian S-400s, commit not to acquire similar systems in the future, and show it has not accepted other Russian weapons. Turkey has met none of these conditions.

At the same time, Ambassador Barrack's comments equating Israel to Hezbollah clearly diverge from longstanding US policy and send a dangerous message to the wider region at a time when US diplomacy needs to be consistent, disciplined, and aligned with US law.

I am writing to urge you to join Representative William Keating and Representative Don Bacon in their letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio sounding the alarm over U.S. Ambassador Tom Barrack's recent comments regarding his belief that Turkey will soon be allowed back into the F-35 program and equating Israel and Hezbollah. Turkey’s possession of Russian S-400 missile systems continues to pose a direct threat to U.S. and allied aircraft. Allowing Turkey access to advanced U.S. technology while it retains these systems would endanger national security and violate U.S. law. Under Section 1245 of the FY2020 National Defense Authorization Act, F-35 transfers to Turkey are prohibited unless Turkey removes the S-400, commits not to acquire similar systems in the future, and has not accepted other Russian weapons. Turkey has yet to meet any of these conditions. At the same time, Ambassador Barrack's comments equating Israel to Hezbollah not only diverges from longstanding U.S. policy, but sends a dangerous message to the region. At a time when the U.S. faces a complex and evolving security environment, it is essential that U.S. diplomatic posture remains consistent, disciplined, and aligned with longstanding U.S. policy and existing federal law.
